PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST
A Free Pumpkin Decorating Contest will be held at the Iroquois Center Annex Building on Monday, October 29th. Kindergarten through 2nd grade will be from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 3rd through 5th grades will be from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. All are welcome. Prizes will be given. PRAIRIE POINT GROUND BREAKING
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Prairie Point Townhomes (retirement community) and the Oak View Townhomes (family living) will be held on Friday, November 2nd at 10 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved to the practice gym at the school.

LETS BE THANKFUL POTLUCK
A potluck dinner will be held on November 9th from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Iroquois Center Annex Building to “Be Thankful”. Everyone is welcome to attend and asked to bring a dish.

GREENSBURG DAY AT THE MUSEUM!
Sternberg Museum of Natural History will be hosting Greensburg Day on November 17th. Special events are planned all day in the Museum’s Seibel Lobby.

MOVING OUT OF KELLER ESTATES
When residents move out of the FEMA homes in Keller Estates, the City would like residents to notify them so the utilities can be shut off. Without notification, the City will continue to bill the resident for the utilities (water and electric).

· County Offices are located on the square. Hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
· Court Services and County Attorney are located in the beige trailers located to the north of the courthouse. Hours are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
· County Commission meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays and the last working day of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the Kiowa County Meeting room located in the northwest gray trailer located southwest of the courthouse square.
· South Landfill hours are Monday – Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The landfill is now charging $3.50 per cubic yard for debris.
· North Landfill will only accept clean concrete. If the concrete has any metal or other debris mixed then it must go to the South Landfill.

The housing department provides temporary rental assistance and security/utility deposits for up to six months for displaced families. The agency also continues to help residents ages 60 and older affected by those disasters who have unmet needs. The grants can be used for items not covered by FEMA or insurance. · Treat ALL power lines as if they are live. Call 911 if you observe an arcing power line.
· Respiratory protection is recommended for all workers. Dust masks and safety glasses are available at the Health Department on the square.
· Burning is prohibited in the Greensburg city limits. In rural areas, follow county ordinances. Burning is strongly discouraged in high winds.
· Protect yourself with gloves, hard-soled shoes or boots. If you have a cut or scratch that does not heal normally, seek necessary medical attention.

TREES FROM WAURIKA, OKLAHOMA
The Waurika FFA delivered approximately 160 sapling trees they have tended all summer to the local 4-Hers affected by the tornado as part of their annual community service project. The FFA group brought Oklahoma Redbud, Silver Maple, a few Crepe Myrtle, and a few Hardy Hibiscus. The trees will be distributed from Big Well Park on Saturday, October 27th at 9 a.m. The trees will be given to anyone with tornado damage (country or city). They will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.

Also being distributed will be a box of flower and vegetable seed packets that have arrived at the Extension Office this week. Anyone is welcome to take the seeds for their home gardens.

COME MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Make a Difference Day will be observed for a weekend in Greensburg. On October 26 – 28 local residents are being asked of volunteer to clean up our community by joining the volunteer groups scheduled to come in from around the state. Activities planned are cleaning up the streets and lots in town, trash will be hauled to the dump.

The Can-Do Action Team is encouraging everyone to get involved with the renovation of Sunset Acre Park on Friday and Saturday. Trees and bulbs will be brought in and help is needed to plant. Spangles will be installing new playground equipment at Sunset Acre Park and a small playground north of the Keller Estates. Lunch will be provided on Saturday by Spangles, Farmland Foods and Dr. Pepper. Sunday will begin at 1 p.m. to finish up any of the projects. If you would like to volunteer, need help or have questions, contact Ann Dixson or Ruth Ann Wedel.

TREES FOR GREENSBURG
The communities of Udall, Hesston and Halstead have teamed up with Westar Energy, the Kansas Forest Service and K-State Research and Extension to plant trees back into the yards of homeowners.

The trees will be provided in phases as residents are ready to move back into their homes. The first phase will be 50 to 75 trees for homeowners ready to move into or living in their homes. You will be allowed to choose your preference of a large shade tree, a small to medium ornamental, or a shrub. The trees will arrive on Saturday, October 27th and will be distributed from the Big Well Park at 9 a.m. There will be a tree planting demonstration for the do-it-yourselfers and volunteers for those needing help with planting.

SOUTHWEST KANSAS AREA AGENCY ON AGING
SWKAAA is assisting residents affected by the May tornadoes and flooding in Barton, Kiowa, and Stafford counties. The housing department provides temporary rental assistance and security/utility deposits for up to six months for displaced families. The agency also continues to help residents ages 60 and older affected by those disasters who have unmet needs. The grants can be used for items not covered by FEMA or insurance. The Can-Do Action Team is encouraging everyone to get involved with the renovation of Sunset Acre Park on Friday and Saturday. Trees and bulbs will be brought in and help is needed to plant. Spangles will be installing new playground equipment on Friday and a small playground north of the Keller Estates by PG Playground Equipment. Lunch will be provided on Saturday by Spangles and Dr. Pepper. Sunday will begin at 1 p.m. to finish up any of the projects. TREES FOR GREENSBURG
The communities of Udall, Hesston and Halstead have teamed up with Westar Energy, the Kansas Forest Service and K-State Research and Extension to plant trees back into the yards of homeowners.

The trees will be provided in phases as residents are ready to move back into their homes. The first phase will be 50 to 75 trees for homeowners ready to move into or living in their homes. You will be allowed to choose your preference of a large shade tree, a small to medium ornamental, or a shrub. The trees will arrive on Saturday, October 27th and will be distributed from the Big Well Park at 9 a.m. There will be a tree planting demonstration for the do-it-yourselfers and volunteers for those needing help with planting.

The communities of Udall, Hesston and Halstead have teamed up with Westar Energy, the Kansas Forest Service and K-State Research and Extension to plant trees back into the yards of homeowners.

The trees will be provided in phases as residents are ready to move back into their homes. The first phase will be 50 to 75 trees for homeowners ready to move into or living in their homes. The trees will arrive in October to be planted. You will be allowed to choose your preference of a large shade tree, a small to medium ornamental, or a shrub. PROPERTY VAULATION REVIEW
Due to the extensive damage by the May tornadoes, staff from the Kiowa County Appraiser’s office and Kansas Property Valuation Division, are inspecting rural properties throughout the county. The appraisal staff will carry identification and the sheriffs department will have their names, vehicle descriptions, and tag numbers on file. Current damage affecting the property’s market value as of January 1, 2008, will be reflected in the 2008 appraised values and the 2008 taxes. Property taxes due in December 2007 will be based on the property as it existed on January 1, 2007.

HIGHWAY 54 CORRIDOR
KDOT will be hosting an informational meeting on Thursday, October 11th from 4 – 6 p.m. to show the latest plans for the proposed highway 54 corridor through Greensburg. The meeting will be held in the Kiowa County Meeting room, located in the northwest gray trailer southwest of the courthouse square. TREES FOR RURAL RESIDENTS
Fifty English Oak saplings arrived at the Extension Office on Tuesday to be distributed to rural residents of Kiowa County who were affected by the May 4th tornado. A few trees still remain at the Extension Office. The free saplings will be distributed on a first come first serve basis and will be available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. There is a 2 tree per household limit due to the quantity available.

GREENSBURG TRASH ROUTES
The City of Greensburg resumed trash pick-up routes last Monday. North/South Streets will be picked up on Mondays and East/West Streets will be picked up on Fridays.

POST OFFICE BOXES
The Post Office recently installed more mail boxes for residents of Greensburg who will be residing her for six months or longer. To register for a box, stop by the Post Office during regular business hours, Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. If you have questions, call 723-2341.

TREES FOR GREENSBURG
The communities of Udall, Hesston and Halstead have teamed up with Westar Energy, the Kansas Forest Service and K-State Research and Extension to plant trees back into the yards of homeowners.

The trees will be provided in phases as residents are ready to move back into their homes. The first phase will be 50 to 75 trees for homeowners ready to move into or living in their homes. The trees will arrive in October to be planted. You will be allowed to choose your preference of a large shade tree, a small to medium ornamental, or a shrub. GREENSBURG RESEARCH STUDY EXPANDED
Researchers at the University of California – Santa Barbara are interested in the interactions that took place between parents and their children before, during and after the tornado of May 4th. Participation will involve a 45-60 minute phone interview with anyone over the age of 12. In return for your participation, you family will receive compensation. PROPERTY VAULATION REVIEW
Due to the extensive damage by the May tornadoes, staff from the Kiowa County Appraiser’s office and Kansas Property Valuation Division, are inspecting rural properties throughout the county. The appraisal staff will carry identification and the sheriffs department will have their names, vehicle descriptions, and tag numbers on file. Current damage affecting the property’s market value as of January 1, 2008, will be reflected in the 2008 appraised values and the 2008 taxes. Property taxes due in December 2007 will be based on the property as it existed on January 1, 2007.

KIOWA COUNTY GOVERNMENT

· County Commission meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays and the last working day of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the northwest gray trailer located southwest of the courthouse square.
· South Landfill hours are Monday – Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The landfill is now charging $3.50 per cubic yard for debris.
· North Landfill will only accept clean concrete. If the concrete has any metal or other debris mixed then it must go to the South Landfill.
